BancorpSouth History

About 142 years ago, in the back of a hardware store in Verona, Mississippi, a new approach to banking was born – an approach built on longevity and the principle that neighbors should help neighbors. It was based on the idea that to better serve a customer is to understand what is right for them.

1876

Raymond Trice and Company, a modest mercantile operation in Verona, Mississippi, receives a perpetual charter to set up a bank in its store.

1886

Raymond Trice and Company moves its banking operations to nearby Tupelo and changes its name to Bank of Lee County, which later becomes the Bank of Tupelo.

1966

Bank of Tupelo changes its name to Bank of Mississippi.

1982

Bancorp of Mississippi, the holding company for Bank of Mississippi, is formed. The name later changes to BancorpSouth, Inc.

1987

Bank of Mississippi merges with First Mississippi National Bank, becoming the state’s first statewide bank.

1992

The Federal Interstate Banking Law passes, allowing BancorpSouth, Inc. to extend its reach into Tennessee through the purchase of Volunteer Bank of Jackson.

1997

Bank of Mississippi officially changes its name to BancorpSouth, signaling an intention to expand to surrounding states.

1998

BancorpSouth, Inc. purchases Alabama Bancorp, the holding company for Highland Bank in Birmingham, extending its presence to the state of Alabama.

1999

BancorpSouth enters the property and casualty business with the acquisition of Stewart, Sneed, Hewes Insurance, a Southern Mississippi agency that was, at the time, the largest independent insurance agency in Mississippi.

2000

BancorpSouth merges with First United Bancshares, entering Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas, and creating a $9 billion bank that ranks in the top 100 banking companies in America.

2002

BancorpSouth and Pinnacle Bancshares of Little Rock, Arkansas, agree to merge.

2003

BancorpSouth acquires Wright & Percy Insurance, the oldest and largest independent insurance agency in Louisiana, with locations in Baton Rouge, Shreveport, Lake Charles and Alexandria. In that same year BancorpSouth merges with Ramsey, Krug, Farrell and Lensing, one of the largest independent insurance agencies in Arkansas.

2004

BancorpSouth merges with the Business Bank of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Premier Bank of Brentwood, Tennessee.

2005

BancorpSouth acquires American State Bank of Jonesboro, Arkansas, adding 11 more branches to the growing system and cementing its footprint in northeast Arkansas.

2006

BancorpSouth enters Florida with the opening of a branch in Destin. An insurance office was also opened in Mobile, Alabama.

2007 – 2012

BancorpSouth continues to expand with locations in new markets such as Springfield, Missouri; Broussard, Louisiana; New Albany, Mississippi; Spanish Fort and Brewton, Alabama; Hot Springs, Rogers and Jonesboro, Arkansas; and Nacogdoches, Texas.

2014 – 2016

BancorpSouth expands its Texas presence with locations in Dallas, Austin, Houston and Sugar Land. Locations were also added in Conway and Fayetteville, Arkansas; in Chattanooga, Tennessee; and in Lake Charles, Lafayette and Gonzales, Louisiana.

2017

BancorpSouth, Inc. officially changes its name to BancorpSouth Bank as part of a corporate restructure process.

Present 

BancorpSouth Insurance Services, Inc., a subsidiary of BancorpSouth Bank, officially changes its name to BXS Insurance.

BancorpSouth Bank acquires Ouachita Independent Bank in Louisiana and First State Bank of Central Texas, adding 38 more branches to its footprint.
